Total Solar Eclipse 2024

Rather than do a portfolio, like my other trips that have a bunch of photos of different subject matter, I thought I’d just post some photos here of the eclipse. I’ve only tried to photograph the sun less than a handful of times before, so these aren’t my best. But I think they are pretty cool regardless.

We drove up to the Dallas area to see the eclipse. We got incredibly lucky as the day started off completely cloudy, started clearing up, got more cloudy just before the eclipse started, and then we got some spotty views of the eclipse up to totality. And then the sky almost completely cleared up right as totality started. It was breathtaking getting to witness the sky turning dark in the middle of the afternoon.

Early in the eclipse, the moon is just beginning to cover the sun. Those black dots on the sun are sunspots.
The last little sliver of the sun before it is completely blocked by the moon.
One of the first shots I got of the total eclipse. You can see several solar flares all around the sun.
Another shot of the total eclipse with some bigger flares now visible.
Although it is blurry, this is the only picture I got with the Baily’s beads, just as the total eclipse was ending.
This was my very picture, and shows more of the “diamond ring” effect as a bit more of the sun becomes visible again.
And one last picture as the moon makes it way across the face of the sun.
Thank you to the Wofford family for having us over to view the eclipse (my dad is on the right with the hat).
